In an effort to mitigate the persistent issue of street flooding in Malé, the government has signed an agreement with the Japanese company, Tech International, to automate the city’s stormwater drainage system. This project, conducted with the assistance of the Japanese government, involves the automation of 16 pump stations across Malé and the establishment of a centralized monitoring system. Additionally, the project includes the acquisition of a specialized vehicle for maintenance operations.
With an estimated investment of $1.5 million, the project is scheduled to be completed within 487 days. Once operational, the system will enable 24-hour continuous monitoring of the pump stations. This initiative is a component of the broader “Disaster Resilience Enhancement” project, which also encompasses the reconstruction and repair of Malé’s coastal breakwater.
