Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikury has been appointed to temporarily oversee the operations of the Maldives Police Service. This appointment follows the honorable retirement of Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, who had been leading the institution, effective from February 18.
Following this development, the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan, has designated Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikury to lead the service in an acting capacity. Farhad Fikury was promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner on February 16, 2024. He first joined the Maldives Police Service on March 30, 1991.
Throughout his distinguished 33-year career in law enforcement, he has served across various sectors of the institution. His extensive experience includes leadership roles within operational, investigative, and administrative and support commands. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Commissioner, Farhad served as the Head of the Operational Support Command and as the Acting Head of the People’s Directorate.
This is not the first time he has stepped into this leadership role; on November 25, 2023, following the retirement of the then-Police Commissioner, Farhad Fikury, who held the rank of Assistant Commissioner at the time, was also entrusted with the temporary leadership of the police institution. According to the Police Service Act, if the position of Commissioner of Police becomes vacant, a permanent appointment must be made within 45 days.
The appointment process involves the Police Board assessing potential candidates and submitting recommendations to the Minister. The President then appoints the Commissioner based on the Minister’s advice. The law mandates that the appointee must hold the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police or higher.
