President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the land reclamation project at Giravaru Falhu is now progressing at an accelerated pace using two dredgers simultaneously. The reclamation activities for this project were initiated on the 30th of last month. The President had previously stated that among the ongoing reclamation projects in the Male’ region, Giravaru Falhu is expected to be completed the earliest. The deployment of two dredgers is aimed at significantly expediting the completion of the project. While the total planned area for reclamation at Giravaru Falhu stands at 167.15 hectares, MACL commenced work last month to reclaim the remaining 97.15 hectares.

According to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the Giravaru Falhu reclamation project released on the 22nd of last month, the first phase of the project saw the reclamation of 12 hectares. This was followed by 18 hectares in the second phase and 26 hectares in the third phase.

The report further indicates that the upcoming stages involve reclaiming areas with significant depth. Alongside the physical reclamation, a new Land Use Plan (LUP) for Giravaru Falhu has been formulated. Due to revisions in the LUP, a re-drawing of lots was conducted for the individuals who were allocated land from this area. A total of 4,072 land plots across four different sizes are scheduled to be issued from Giravaru Falhu.

Details of the land plots and sizes allocated from Giravaru Falhu:

  • 2,605 plots of 1,250 square feet
  • 1,213 plots of 1,650 square feet
  • 253 plots of 2,050 square feet
  • 1 plot of 2,450 square feet

The allocation of land plots from Giravaru Falhu during the previous administration was carried out without a proper Land Use Plan. Consequently, sufficient space had not been designated for the essential services required for the projected population. This administration decided to add an additional 113 hectares to the Giravaru Falhu reclamation project and has since resumed the physical reclamation work.
