Discussions have been held regarding ways for Maldivian content creators to generate income through TikTok. These discussions took place during a meeting between the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, and senior officials from TikTok.

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) currently being held in Davos, Switzerland, Minister Saeed met with Emir Gelen, TikTok’s Head of Government Relations and Public Policy for the METAPSA region, to engage in high-level talks.

According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the meeting focused on facilitating opportunities for Maldivian content creators to monetize their work through the platform.

This initiative is a key part of the government’s efforts to fulfill President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto pledge to enable Maldivian youth and creators to benefit from digital platforms. Previously, a delegation from TikTok visited the Maldives and held discussions with the Ministry regarding this matter.

During those meetings, Minister Saeed highlighted that establishing partnerships with such international platforms would open doors for Maldivian creators in the global market and contribute to the country’s economic growth. He further noted that the government is committed to maintaining a close relationship with TikTok to achieve practical results in the near future.

The Minister also stated that discussions have commenced with TikTok’s regional offices to identify the most beneficial outcomes for the Maldives. Additionally, Minister Mohamed Saeed had previously mentioned that the government has sought assistance from the Chinese government to further support these efforts.
