Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has officially begun purchasing yellowfin tuna weighing 10kg and above across its various centers and vessels. According to the company’s current pricing structure, tuna weighing between 10kg and 15kg is purchased at MVR 20 per kilogram, while tuna exceeding 15kg is priced at MVR 25 per kilogram.
Fishermen can now weigh their catch at MIFCO facilities located in Kandoogiri, Kooddoo, Addu, Fuvahmulah, Gadhdhoo, and Thinadhoo. In alignment with the government’s commitment, MIFCO guarantees that payments will be disbursed to fishermen within 48 hours of weighing the fish. This initiative aims to address the challenges faced by fishermen who experience payment delays when selling to private companies.
Furthermore, the company has announced that work on establishing a dedicated yellowfin tuna processing facility in Hulhumale’ is scheduled to commence within this month.
