Human rights organizations have reported that the death toll from the ongoing protests in Iran has exceeded 500. According to the latest figures released by domestic and international human rights groups, 490 protesters and 48 members of the security forces have been confirmed dead. The data also indicates that more than 10,600 individuals have been detained during the unrest. However, Iranian authorities have not yet officially confirmed these statistics.

The demonstrations, sparked by soaring inflation and the rising cost of living, began late last month. Since then, the movement has spread to various regions, leading to violent confrontations with security forces, significant property damage, and numerous fatalities. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly issued warnings that the United States would intervene in defense of the protesters if disproportionate force were used against them. Tehran has responded to these threats by stating that any such military action would prompt retaliatory strikes against U.S. military bases.

The protests that began last December are considered the largest-scale unrest in Iran since 2022, with observers noting their increasing intensity day by day. While analysts suggest that the government initially appeared to respect the right to peaceful assembly, the administration is now reportedly attempting to safeguard national interests while managing the situation. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has characterized the protesters as individuals intent on damaging property and inciting destruction.
