Minister of Finance and National Planning, Moosa Zameer, has stated that following the economic reforms introduced by the government, numerous parties have expressed interest in investing in the Maldives. However, he emphasized that investment opportunities will only be granted after a thorough evaluation and due diligence process.
Speaking at the ceremony held to commence the physical works of the land reclamation project for the development of HA. Dhidhdhoo Airport, Minister Zameer noted that the fruits of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s current efforts are becoming visible. The Minister highlighted that investor interest in the Maldives has significantly increased, citing the fact that some of the world’s largest companies are approaching the government to undertake land reclamation projects in the country.
Addressing recent rumors regarding the potential handover of the Malé Commercial Port to a foreign entity, the Minister assured that the President would only make decisions that are in the best interest of the citizens. He categorically denied the claims that the commercial port or any other state asset is being sold off.
“There is interest in investing in both the port and the airport. The President reviews every proposal received. As an academic individual, he makes decisions after carefully considering the proposals and the counsel provided by the Ministers. None of these rumors hold any truth,” the Finance Minister stated.
Minister Zameer further noted that the President’s decisions are based on maximizing benefits for the people, and all development projects are being carried out with this principle in mind.
The Minister also pointed out that previous projects in the Maldives were often implemented without proper planning or a sustainable operational vision. He remarked that the President is departing from this approach, emphasizing that past mismanagement is not a reason for current operations to follow the same path. He concluded by stating that development projects are only awarded to parties once their capability to deliver has been fully verified.
