“Magey Solar” Program: 783 Kilowatt Solar PV Systems Installed in Households

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced that 783 kilowatts of solar PV systems have been installed in households this year under the “Magey Solar” program. This initiative is an ongoing project designed to facilitate the provision of solar electricity generation systems to households.

The practical implementation of this program was inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in January of this year in Haa Alifu Filladhoo. The primary objectives of this program are to reduce electricity bill expenses and to minimize the reliance on fuel-generated energy in the Maldives.

Under the first phase of the “Magey Solar” program, 783 kilowatts of solar PV systems have been installed in households across 10 atolls of the Maldives this year. This phase will ultimately provide a total of 3 megawatts of solar PV systems to households. Furthermore, a tender has been announced to find a supplier for an additional 1.5 megawatts of solar PV systems for households, and preparations are currently underway to open bids for the provision of another 7 megawatts of systems.

Through this program, individuals interested in installing solar PV systems are offered the opportunity to purchase these systems on an installment basis via utility companies, under net-metering arrangements and predefined guidelines. This program, which aims to install solar systems in a total of 748 households, represents a significant step towards achieving the government’s target of generating 33% of the Maldives’ electricity from renewable energy sources.
