Fuel Supply Maldives (FSM) has announced that they have decided to install CCTV cameras on their fuel barges to address the growing issue of illegal fuel sales. Speaking at the Parliament’s Public Finance Committee in response to questions from members, FSM Managing Director Fathimath Arshaan stated that the company’s board has made this decision due to the increasing problem of unauthorized fuel sales from barges.

Arshaan explained that they have already initiated a pilot project to install CCTV cameras on the barges. She noted that along with the CCTV systems, modems will also be installed to enable real-time monitoring of activities.

“We have already installed modems on two barges. We will install them on additional barges in the future. We have schedule have scheduled installations for three more barges. We have planned to install them on the five barges that will be docked earliest,” said FSM Managing Director Fathimath Arshaan.

In addition to installing CCTV cameras, Arshaan mentioned that they have decided to rotate staff working on the barges every three months as another measure to address the issue. “With CCTV cameras installed, we can view activities live through the modem whenever needed, at the time the activity is occurring,” Arshaan explained.

She added that they have been closely monitoring the issue of illegal fuel sales and have noticed an increase in such activities on some barges. Arshaan acknowledged that this problem has persisted due to inadequate measures taken thus far. She assured that the company’s management will take this matter very seriously going forward, including terminating employees if necessary.

FSM is a subsidiary of STO (State Trading Organization) and is one of the largest providers of fuel services in the Maldives.
