
Minister of Sports and Fitness Abdullah Rafiu has stated that significant efforts are being made to facilitate the advancement of Maldivian athletes, promising a bright future ahead for sports athletes. The Minister observed the performance of Maldivian athletes who competed in the 3rd Asian Youth Games 2025 held in Manama, Bahrain. In an interview given while in Bahrain, the Minister sai Minister said that the Games showcased a very promising picture.
He mentioned that under the efforts to promote sports, there are skill exchange programs included in the memorandums of understanding being established with many countries. In this regard, he noted that such opportunities have been facilitated with Saudi Arabia as well. The Minister also highlighted that a memorandum of understanding was signed with China’s Fujian Province last year.
“We will also receive opportunities for training coaches and athletes from Fujian Province during November. Additionally, they have arranged to send their technical experts to the Maldives to conduct a training program for about fifty athletes and coaches. Recently, we also provided an exposure program in China for first aiders who support athletes.”
Furthermore, the Minister stated that opportunities for athletes are being facilitated in various ways. He added that the sports system will be designed to provide provide significant opportunities for athletes within the Maldives as well. In this context, he noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had announced an increase in the salaries of national athletes starting from May this year.
He also mentioned that the Artha Program will soon be launched with a new formula, which will include educational components and scholarships, representing a significant advancement for young athletes. “With this, athletes studying for O-Levels or A-Levels won’t need to return to the Maldives. These athletes will have the opportunity to both study and compete.”
Additionally, the Minister stated that arrangements have been made to provide insurance for athletes starting from January next year. Therefore, he emphasized that extensive efforts are being made to facilitate the advancement of Maldivian athletes, and a bright future lies ahead for sports athletes.
