A White Alert has been issued for a significant portion of the Maldives, encompassing 13 atolls, due to anticipated strong winds and rough seas. The White Alert is effective from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM today, covering the area from Kaafu Atoll to Addu City. The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) stated that during these hours, winds are expected to average between 19 and 24 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour during squalls.
The MET Office further explained that the current spell of adverse weather affecting the Maldives is due to a circulation that has formed to the southeast of the country. They also predicted that from today until Friday of this month, southern and central atolls would experience strong winds and rough seas. Alongside this, a large part of the Maldives is expected to experience widespread rain and thunderstorms, with winds strengthening and gusting even higher during squalls, according to the MET Office. The agency also stated that tidal surges are possible during high tide. As rough weather is expected in the coming days, the National Meteorological Service has urged sea travelers and the general public to exercise caution and stay updated on weather conditions.
