President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will not take any side in the upcoming referendum in Addu City and will implement whatever the citizens decide. The President made this statement following the Cabinet’s decision to hold a referendum on the 28th and 29th of this month regarding changes to the structure of the Addu City Council. In a post shared on social media, the President said that the government has no specific stance on the referendum to be held in Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo of Addu City, nor does it have any preferred outcome. The President stated that the government will implement any decision made by the majority of the citizens’ votes.

The President announced the government’s decision to hold a referendum on establishing separate councils for the islands of Addu Atoll during the “With the People” podcast on November 17. The President said that this decision was made in response to requests from some islands of Addu during the presidential election period. Regarding the referendum, the President stated that this vote in Addu would be historic. Along with the Public Referendum Act, this will be the first vote held under this law.
