The Nepalese government has reported that due to the ongoing monsoon rains in Nepal, heavy rainfall has caused flooding in various areas and landslides, resulting in 50 deaths so far. A spokesperson for the Nepalese army stated that 35 people have died due to landslides in the eastern border region of Nepal adjacent to India. He also mentioned that nine people have been reported missing due to flooding in different areas, and three people have died from lightning strikes. A spokesperson for Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority said that search and rescue operations are ongoing without interruption.
Due to the flooding, many highways and roads have become difficult for land vehicles to navigate, disrupting transportation. An official from Kathmandu Airport stated that while domestic flights have been affected due to the adverse weather conditions, international flights are continuing without any obstacles. Officials have warned that the Koshi River in southeastern Nepal is at risk of overflowing due to the heavy rainfall. As the weather is forecast to worsen by the end of today, relevant authorities have appealed to the public to prioritize safety and caution.
