The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning has announced a search for a consultancy service provider to design and prepare a detailed master plan for Ras Male’. Ras Male’ is set to be developed as an environmentally friendly island. The Ministry stated that the main objective of this consultancy is to create a master plan that adheres to the principles of the Climate Risk Adaptive Island Planning Model, is environmentally sustainable, and economically selfically self-sufficient. The Ministry also mentioned that this plan would pave the way for long-term development and be a strategic plan based on potential challenges arising from climate change.
The consultant will be selected in accordance with the Quality and Cost Based Selection Method as specified in the State Financial Regulations, according to the Ministry. Interested parties have been given the opportunity to submit an “Expression of Interest” by the 14th of this monthS.
Ras Male’ is an island being developed by reclaiming 1009 hectares from Fushidhiggaru lagoon near Male’. It is the largest project undertaken by the current government to address the housing issue. The practical work on the Ras Male’ project began on December 18, 2023. The Ras Male’ project is the largest and most extensive housing project in the Maldives. The government has stated that the Ras Male’ project will ensure 65,000 homes. Under the housing project, the work for the first 15,000 housing units has already been assigned to a Chinese company.
The government has stated that Ras Male’, which is planned to be developed as an eco-friendly city model, will become the first zero-carbon city developed in the Indian Ocean. They have also mentioned that this project will introduce technological advancements and other innovative, environmentally friendly changes to the Maldives.
