The Criminal Court has sentenced Abdullah Maumoon, the former Managing Director of Maldive Gas, to 12 years in prison after finding him guilty on two counts of bribery. The state pressed charges against Maumoon, alleging that he accepted bribes from a company that was awarded contracts to supply goods to Maldive Gas while he was serving as the Managing Director in 2016 during the PPM government. The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that out of the seven bribery charges filed against Abdullah Maumoon for allegedly accepting bribes while serving as the Managing Director of Maldive Gas in 2016, verdicts for two charges were delivered today. He was found guilty on these two charges and sentenced to 12 years, 9 months, and 18 days in prison.

The PG Office said that the verdicts for the other five charges filed by the state against him will be announced on a different day. The Criminal Court received the case to prosecute Abdullah Maumoon, some of his family members, and certain companies allegedly associated with him on charges of bribery on April 18 of last year. The Anti-Corruption Commission had forwarded the case to the PG for prosecution on January 22, 2023.

The PG Office stated that investigations revealed that while Abdullah Maumoon was serving as the Managing Director of Maldive Gas Private Limited, he received a total of 3,106,189.38 Rufiyaa (Three million one hundred and six thousand one hundred and eighty-nine Rufiyaa and thirty-eight Laari) as bribes from a foreign company during transactions to procure cooking gas (LPG) for the company. It was also found that this money was deposited into accounts of some companies allegedly associated with him and some of his family members.
