Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has stated that the countries claiming to advocate for human rights and who established that system are the ones supporting and assisting the ongoing genocide in Palestine. Speaking at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, the Minister said that the major countries pretending not to see the ongoing genocide in Palestine and supporting it is the biggest shame of the century. Addressing the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel heavily criticized the double standards of major world powers regarding the people of Palestine. The Minister said that those providing weapons and financial support to Israel’s ongoing genocide in Palestine are the very countries that claim to be the biggest advocates for human rights.

The Minister described it as the century’s greatest shame that these countries have pretended not to see the genocide occurring in Palestine for so many years. He also stated that these countries’ approach and policies in this matter reveal their refusal to acknowledge that the Palestinian people have an equal right to life and security.

“The countries that built the international justice system are the ones supporting Israel’s acts of genocide in Palestine. The century’s biggest shame is pretending not to see the ongoing genocide in Palestine,” the Minister said. He added that the failure of the UN and world powers to bring Israel before international justice, and the discrimination in enforcing international laws and norms between countries, has greatly increased the risk of countries losing trust in the entire system.

With the opportunity given to Israel to commit acts of genocide, the Maldives has painted a frightening future for the world. As such, the Minister shared a warning message at the UN General Assembly about the danger of a world where laws have no power, stating that even powerful countries will not be safe. Therefore, the Maldives has called for restructuring the UN Security Council and abolishing the veto power system held by certain countries.

In his speech, the Minister also highlighted important issues in the environmental sector. He stated that small island nations are bearing the burden of major world powers not taking responsibility for the environmental damage they cause. Additionally, the Minister shed light on the financial difficulties faced by small countries in basic areas such as resilience, education, and health, without debt relief for foreign loans taken for development and recovery from environmental damages.
