Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced that Italy is prepared to recognize Palestine as an independent state, albeit with conditions. Meloni stated that she would propose a resolution to the country’s parliament to recognize Palestinian independence, but clarified that it would include certain stipulations. Among the conditions Meloni has put forth for Italy to recognize Palestinian independence is the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the group that governs Gaza. She also stated that Italy opposes Hamas’s participation in any new government formed in Gaza. “I do not oppose the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, but we must set the most favorable conditions,” she said.

During her visit to New York, USA, to attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly session, Meloni spoke to journalists and expressed concern over the pressure being exerted on Israel by the international community, condemning such actions. She added that pressure should instead be directed at Hamas. Italy has a long-standing friendship and provides significant support to Israel. While some major Western powers have recognized Palestine as an independent state, Italy has been refusing to do so. Among the Western powers that have recognized Palestinian independence are the United Kingdom, France, and Canada. Furthermore, Australia has also recognized Palestinian independence.

These countries have taken this step, speaking out against Israel, in opposition to the genocide being perpetrated by Israel against the Muslims of Gaza. It is also in condemnation of the inhumane crimes committed by Israel in seizing additional Palestinian territories. Since October 7, 2023, the number of people martyred in the ongoing genocide in Gaza has risen to over 65,000. The majority of these are innocent women, children, and elderly individuals unable to move independently. Furthermore, the number of injured has surpassed 158,000.
