President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a proposal to cut some of the state-provided benefits for former presidents and members will be submitted in the upcoming session of the People’s Majlis this year. The President made this statement while speaking on a podcast with the public. The President announced the decision to amend the law to cut some state-provided benefits for former presidents and members on the 10th of this month.

Speaking on the podcast with the public, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the state is currently spending a considerable amount on former presidents. However, he stated that changes need to be made after considering the country’s situation. The President also mentioned that the public does not consider the current benefits provided to former members of the People’s Majlis as fair, and therefore, work is being done to make changes to these benefits.

“When the upcoming parliamentary session opens, among the changes and amendments we propose, we will submit proposals to cut some benefits and make amendments to the benefits received by former presidents and former members of parliament who are no longer serving. I believe this is very important for the country and something the people greatly desire,” the President said.

The President stated that the public believes it is not appropriate for individuals who have retired from various institutions to continue receiving their monthly retirement benefits while working full-time in other government positions. He considers it fair to suspend these retirement benefits during such periods of full-time employment. Therefore, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the government has decided to standardize the pension benefits received by those who have retired from government jobs.
