The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has announced that it will strengthen defensive measures in its eastern flank countries to ensure the safety and security of its member states. NATO decided to bolster the defense of its eastern member countries following an incident where military drones entered Polish airspace. Two days ago, when military drones entered Polish airspace, the country’s military attacked, defended against, and shot down these drones. This is the first such incident since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. The war between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.
Concerns about the incident in Poland have been expressed during the ongoing United Nations General Assembly session in New York. Expressing concern about the matter, the United States, which advocates as NATO’s most powerful member, said it would take all necessary measures to ensure the defense of the alliance’s member states. However, President Donald Trump had previously stated that he believes Russian drones entered Polish airspace by mistake. His statement in this regard has caused dissatisfaction among some NATO member countries. Poland believes that Russia intentionally sent military drones into its airspace. Poland also characterized it as an act carried out to test the capabilities of Poland’s and NATO’s defense systems. Poland has also expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s characterization of the incident as a mistake.
Poland and the United States have a long-standing, close friendship. However, the incident of Poland shooting down Russian drones has led to a difference of opinion between Warsaw and Washington. The Polish Foreign Minister said he hopes Washington will take strong measures to demonstrate its continued solidarity with Poland. Later, the United States issued a joint statement with NATO member countries condemning the incident of Russian military drones entering Polish airspace. The statement also described Russia’s action as a violation of international laws and the UN Charter.
Russia said that drones entered Polish airspace at a time when Russian forces were launching attacks on targets in Ukraine. Russia also stated that there was no intention to attack Poland. Regarding this matter, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said that their military is not currently using drones with a range of more than 700 kilometers. He also said that the drones being used to attack Ukraine have little chance of traveling as far as Poland.
However, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that they have decided to launch an operation called d ‘Eastern Sentry’ to strengthen the defense of the countries in the eastern flank among NATO member states. NATO’s military commander, Alexus Grinkevich, said that under this operation, they have begun work to strengthen defensive measures from the northern Baltic countries to Romania and Bulgaria in the south. As such, NATO has decided to send additional military aircraft and air defense systems to these countries, establish more military bases, and send additional troops.
