France’s President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Gabriel Attal, one of his close allies, as the country’s new Prime Minister. This appointment comes as widespread protests have begun to take place across various regions of the country. Attal is the fifth person to be appointed to the position of Prime Minister in France in just over two years.

Attal, who previously served as the Minister of Defense, has been appointed as Prime Minister amid political turbulence following the end of his predecessor François Borne’s government. Known as a loyal figure to Macron, Attal’s main task is to sustainably implement the reform agenda that Macron wishes to pursue. This policy includes business-friendly measures such as lowering tax rates and raising the retirement age for government positions. Attal’s first and most significant challenge will be reaching an agreement on the 2026 budget. France’s deficit currently stands at approximately six six percent.
