Liverpool, the most popular club among Maldivians, loses

Crystal Palace has defeated Liverpool 3-2 on penalties in the Community Shield match, which marks the beginning of the English football season.

The match was played at Wembley Stadium in London in front of over 82,000 spectators. A moment of silence was observed in the 20th minute in memory of Liverpool’s Diego Jota, who recently died in a car accident.

Both teams displayed competitive play, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw at full time.

Liverpool, featuring four of their five new signings in the starting lineup, took the lead in the fourth minute with a goal from Hugo Ekitike. The opportunity was created by Florian Wirtz, who recently joined Liverpool for a fee of 116 million pounds.

However, Crystal Palace equalized 13 minutes later. The goal came from a penalty awarded after Van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr in the penalty area, which Shawn Philip Mateta successfully converted.

Liverpool regained the lead in the 21st minute with a goal from new signing Jeremy Frimpong.

Although Liverpool led 2-1 at halftime, Crystal Palace intensified their attacks in the second half.

Crystal Palace equalized for the second time in the 77th minute with a goal from Ismaila Sarr.

With the match ending 2-2 at full time, it went to penalties. Crystal Palace’s goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved penalties from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Mohamed Salah’s penalty went over the crossbar, while 21-year-old midfielder Justin Devenny scored the winning penalty for Crystal Palace.
