The Ministry of Health has announced that seven children are scheduled to be sent abroad this month for bone marrow transplants. The Islamic Ministry and the Health Ministry signed an agreement last February to fund bone marrow transplants for 10 children annually through the Zakat Fund. Of the 10 children selected for bone marrow transplants this year, three were sent during April.
The Ministry stated that out of the seven children being sent this month, three will depart from the Maldives today. One child is scheduled to leave tomorrow, while three more children will depart on the 8th, 9th, and 12th of this month, according to the Ministry.
Health Minister Abdullah Nazim has met with the families of these children today. While up to one million rufiyaa is provided as assistance for each child’s bone marrow transplant, there are currently 22 children on the waiting list.
