The President of the Maldives Bodyboarding Association (MBBA), Hussein Nizam, has stated that the Labera Bodyboarding Challenge, which is the second tournament of the National Bodyboarding League starting in Male’, will be a very special competition, and athletes from the Hudhu Fonu program will also compete in this tournament. Nizam said that they initially planned to hold this tournament in Fuvahmulah, but due to certain issues, it was relocated to Male’. The second tournament of the league couldn’t be held in Fuvahmulah City because there was no way to cover the expenses of hosting the event. Nizam said that it’s a good sign that children are coming to this competition through the Hudhu Fonu program, which the association has been conducting since the beginning of this year. He mentioned that athletes from N. Lhohi and Sh. Kanditheemu, where Hudhu Fonu clinics were conducted, are also participating in the Labera Bodyboarding Challenge.

“This is the most important thing to promote this sport. By incorporating clinics into this, bringing in as many young children as possible, having them come here and compete in these tournaments, the sport will actually progress through the experience they gain,” Nizam said. The Labera Bodyboarding Challenge is a competition open to bodyboarders between the ages of 14 and 40. A total of 21 athletes will compete in 3 categories in this tournament. This includes 19 athletes in the Men’s Open Division, 9 athletes in the Junior Men’s Division, and 7 athletes in the Dropknee category.

The Labera Bodyboarding Challenge is a tournament being held from 5-8 of this month at Male’ Varunulaa Raalhugandu, with the assistance of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment. This year, the competition features 8 athletes from Male’ City, 2 athletes from Fuvahmulah City, 3 athletes from N. Lhohi, 2 athletes from L. Gan, 2 athletes from Sh. Kanditheemu, an athlete from N. Maafaroo, an athlete participating from M. Veyvah, and an athlete from K. Dhiffushi.
