Ibrahim Shujau, Member of Parliament for Baarah Constituency, has been removed from the Parliament’s Finance Committee while a case is being investigated by the police in connection with a report from the Maldives Monetary Authority’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). The report alleges that companies in which Shujau has shares received undue benefits. In today’s session, the Speaker of Parliament announced that Hanan Mohamed Rasheed, the PNC member for Guraidhoo Constituency, has been appointed to the Finance Committee to replace Shujau. Shujau has been reassigned to the National Development and Heritage Committee.
While the police have confirmed that they are investigating this matter, Shujau has questioned the authenticity of the report. The report claims that a large portion of the funds released to SIWEC in connection with President Muizzu’s inauguration ceremony was deposited into companies in which Shujau has shares, and that these funds were used to purchase apartments. Following the public release of this report, Abdullah Ashraf, the head of the FIU, was removed from his position and transferred to another department.
