The office of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has stated that they are considering taking legal steps in response to statements made by former President Abdulla Yameen, who claimed that Maumoon had bribed Supreme Court judges in February 2018 during Yameen’s presidency. In a press release, Maumoon’s office said that the Supreme Court order issued in February of the last year of Yameen’s presidency had no connection to Maumoon.

The statement further said that Yameen’s claims about Maumoon Abdul Gayoom being arrested for bribing Supreme Court judges are extremely low-level lies told to tarnish President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s name. It emphasized that Maumoon has never engaged in the despicable act of bribing judges to obtain a court order or any other decision from the Supreme Court. The statement described Yameen’s comments as a very low-grade act and noted that Maumoon is considering taking legal steps in response to these statements.

Maumoon’s office assured that he has never committed any act contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and its laws. They expressed confidence in this assertion.
