The Elections Commission has confirmed that the People’s National Front (PNF) has failed to field any candidates for the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections, scheduled for April 4. While the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has fielded the highest number of candidates, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) follows with the second-highest representation.

The leader of the PNF, former President Abdulla Yameen, had previously remarked that these are minor elections where the ruling party typically holds a significant advantage. However, it is observed that Yameen has extended his support to several independent candidates contesting in this election. A total of six political parties, along with numerous independent candidates, are set to participate in the upcoming polls.
