Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom made illegal deals every time he traveled to Singapore under the pretext of poor health during his presidency, according to Congress Party’s PG Leader Ibrahim Falah. Falah made this statement in a tweet responding to Yameen’s accusation that the government is trying to sell Hanimaadhoo Airport to India’s Adani Group. Falah stated that Yameen engaged in corrupt practices and made illegal deals for personal gain while in power.
“Hassan might think that when you pull the bottom of a banana plant, it will cut off the bunch of bananas. Well, it seems something other than money needs to come out of his mouth. Every trip made to Singapore during his own presidency, pretending to be ill, was to make illegal deals and loot the state. So he thinks all leaders will do the same,” Falah said.
Yameen has also accused President Muizzu of meeting with the Chairman of Adani Group during his recent trip to Singapore to discuss selling Hanimaadhoo Airport. However, the biggest theft in Maldivian history occurred during Yameen’s administration. He is still facing charges for the massive MMPRC corruption scandal. As the saying goes, “You’ll know the ripeness of a banana when the bat bites it,” Yameen’s corruption was exposed after his term ended. Therefore, Falah said that when you pull the bottom of a banana plant, Yameen might think they’re trying to cut off the bunch of bananas. While many PNC members have responded to these allegations, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has denied them.
With the majority of work on Hanimaadhoo Airport now complete, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Ahmed Muttalib has stated that it will be fully finished by September this year, according to schedule.
