Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has said that the government is working on introducing an appropriate system to ensure safety for vehicles used by the general public. The Minister said this in a special interview given to PSM News regarding the work of his ministry. The most commonly used vehicles in the Maldives are land vehicles. In addition to these vehicles, sea vessels are also used for inter-island travel and various purposes. Although many vehicles are being used in the Maldives, there is no specific system to provide adequate safety for them. Theft and damage to vehicles is a concern for many people.
Minister of Transport Mohamed Ameen said that although many vehicles are being used in the Maldives, adequate safety is not provided for them. “Now you can see many motorcycles, cars, launches, and all these things, but their owners don’t have security for them today. They can be stolen. It’s not practical for the police to monitor all these things. There are systems in the world now where the owner of a unit can know if it’s moved or taken somewhere. It’s the government’s responsibility to bring this technology and give it to the people,” the Minister said.
Minister Ameen has noted that if this technology is introduced to the Maldives, it will have many benefits. Among them, the Minister noted that it will make it easier for enforcement agencies to implement regulations. In addition, the Minister noted that if someone tries to damage a private person’s vehicle, it will also be known. “If RFID technology is used, fake number plates can’t be used. If someone else interferes with it or takes it, alert systems can also be established. And when driving fast and speeding beyond control, enforcement agencies will know. So that technology exists in the world now. The reality we should accept is that this technology should be brought to the Maldives now,” the Minister said.
The Minister said that if this technology is brought to the Maldives, adequate safety can be provided for the vehicles being used in the Maldivian transport system. And as a result, people will also be assured of the safety of their property. While the government is working to solve the problems in the transport system, a special program called Malefahi has been started to solve this problem in the Male’ area. According to some statistics released by the government last year, more than 118,000 vehicles are registered in the Male’ area alone. Most of these are two-wheeled vehicles, and statistics show that 70% of two-wheeled vehicles registered in the Maldives are registered in the Male’ area.
