Work on the large tuna factory in Hulhumale’ to begin this year and finish next year
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that work on building a large tuna factory in Hulhumale’ will begin this year. The President said this in his Presidential Address to the People’s Majlis. According to President Muizzu, as he has promised to expand the fishing industry, work on establishing cold storage and fish processing plants will proceed. In addition, the President said that work on establishing cold storage in GDh. Thinadhoo, M. Mulaku, GA. Kolamaafushi, and HA. Ihavandhoo will proceed at various stages this year.
“Work on establishing a large tuna factory in Hulhumale’ will proceed at various stages this year. Among these, the cold storage work in Felivaru and GDh. Thinadhoo will be completed this year. And in 2026, the work on the large tuna factory in Hulhumale’, HA. Ihavandhoo, M. Mulaku cold storage, and Felivaru fish processing plant will be completed,” the President said.
President Muizzu said that the cold storage work in Felivaru and GDh. Thinadhoo will be completed this year. He noted that the work on the Hulhumale’ large tuna factory, HA. Ihavandhoo, M. Mulaku cold storage, and Felivaru fish processing plant will be completed next year. The President also said that the cold storage and fish processing plants being established in GDh. Fiyoari and F. Nilandhoo will be completed in early 2027.
Regarding the financing of these projects, the President said that the Felivaru cold storage is a facility being built under an Indian Exim Bank loan, and the projects in Mulaku and Kolamaafushi are funded by Saudi funds. He noted that the Ihavandhoo cold storage and Hulhumale’ tuna factory are facilities being established with the help of the Islamic Development Bank, and the projects in Fiyoari and F. Nilandhoo are financed by a Chinese loan facility.
The President has said that these projects will bring significant advancements to the fishing industry and create many job opportunities.
