“With WAMCO’s service, waste will be managed in Gulhi, solving the waste problem”

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that with the commencement of WAMCO’s waste management service in K. Gulhi, an appropriate solution will be found for the waste problem faced by the island. Speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate WAMCO’s service in Gulhi yesterday, the Minister said that Gulhi is already an island where tourism is expanding widely, and tourism will further expand in the future. Therefore, the Minister noted that the waste issue is a major challenge faced by the residents of the island.

The Minister said that with the start of WAMCO’s service, waste collection and management activities will be carried out according to robust principles. He also said that this will strengthen the waste disposal system and will be an important step towards protecting the island’s environment.

“WAMCO has expanded its services to many areas of the Maldives over the past year. In line with the President’s pledge, work has begun to provide this service in K. Gulhi as well,” the Minister said.

Gulhi as well. He also mentioned that WAMCO’s new initiatives include starting the containerization of waste brought from Male’ and beginning to provide bunkering services.

The government has developed a national plan to find a permanent solution to the waste problem faced by inhabited islands in the Maldives. This plan includes assessing the state of waste management, identifying steps that can be taken to manage waste properly, and raising public awareness.
