The Ambassador of China to the Maldives, Kong Xianhui, has stated that with the Free Trade Agreement established between the Maldives and China, Chinese technologies have been introduced to the Maldives, and easier investment opportunities have been created. The Ambassador made these remarks while speaking at the “From Maldives to Global Markets” workshop, organized by the government in collaboration with Alibaba, one of the world’s largest online commerce platforms.
Ambassador Kong Xianhui said that the Free Trade Agreement has opened up opportunities not only in the business sector. He mentioned that it has become easier for Chinese companies to invest in the Maldives, paving the way for bringing new technologies and various business management experiences to the country. The Ambassador noted that this would lead to advancements for the Maldives in many areas. “It will facilitate progress in mariculture, fish product manufacturing, renewable energy utilization, digital economy, and agricultural development,” said the Chinese Ambassador.

Highlighting that Maldivian entrepreneurs would gain a wealth of information through Alibaba at the “From Maldives to Global Markets” forum, the Ambassador stated that these training sessions would open doors for Maldivian businesses to expand into international markets. More than 600 people have participated in the workshop titled “From Maldives to Global Markets,” organized by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade in collaboration with Alibaba. Information at this workshop will be shared by high-level representatives from the Alibaba platform.
As such, in addition to opening seller accounts, the forum is set to provide guidance on advertising and selling Maldivian products on Alibaba, as well as how to identify the latest trends using the platform’s AI. The Ministry of Economic Development says this will facilitate online selling of goods and provision of various services through the Alibaba website.
