President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he will resolve the electricity issues faced by the islands of the Maldives before this year’s Ramadan. Speaking at a function held in Gd. Fiyoari tonight, the President said that many generators used by Fenaka Corporation to provide electricity in many islands need to be replaced, and when the government took over, “it had been many years since these were properly maintained.” He also mentioned that a large amount of money had to be spent last year to solve electricity problems.
“We have now started special efforts, with the Finance Ministry, Fenaka, STO, and MTCC working together. We are aiming to resolve generator issues in all islands with electricity problems across the Maldives, without leaving out any island, by bringing and installing the necessary generators before the upcoming Ramadan month,” President Dr. Muizzu said.
He said that this would be a “big challenge.” However, “we have started this work,” he said.
“Resolving the electricity issue to a level where you won’t have to worry during the month of Ramadan is our aim. God willing, we will try to do it in a way that satisfies you,” the President said.
Islands in the Maldives frequently face electricity issues. These include power cuts due to overloading of generators in the islands, generators not producing enough electricity for households, and power cuts due to maintenance issues. These are recurring problems. It has been noted in previous years that Ramadan is generally a month of high electricity consumption in the Maldives.
