Noting that a shadow of unrest and injustice has fallen over the world, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called for remaining united as one, recognizing the weight of the Commonwealth’s collective action, to achieve safety and progress in these difficult times. The President made this call in his message on the occasion of Commonwealth Day.

In his message, the President said that as we celebrate Commonwealth Day, we are reminded of the strength in the unity of the Commonwealth family. He stated that for the Commonwealth, unity is not just a concept, but a force that provides the cooperation needed to overcome shared challenges among member states.

The President further said in his message that this year’s Commonwealth Day theme “Together We Thrive” symbolizes the importance the Maldivian state places on unity, resilience, and progress. Noting that a shadow of unrest and injustice has fallen over the world, he called for remaining united as one, recognizing the weight of the Commonwealth’s collective action, to achieve safety and progress in these difficult times.

In his message, he appreciated the Commonwealth’s efforts in advocating for the rights of small states like the Maldives, and working on issues of particular interest to small states such as climate resilience, access to financial resources, and empowerment of women and youth. He also assured that the Maldives would remain committed to the principles of democracy mandated by the Commonwealth Charter, including human rights, good governance, and sustainable development. The President described last year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa as symbolizing the importance the Commonwealth places on unity and cooperation. He said it is imperative to work together to show the results of that meeting in practice.

The President concluded his message by stating that the Maldives stands ready to strengthen its relationship with the Commonwealth and member states to ensure the progress of every individual in the Commonwealth.
