The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has scheduled walk-in interviews for this coming Saturday to recruit drivers for the newly established government taxi service. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, MTCC has been entrusted with the operational management of this taxi line.
MTCC has invited applications for both part-time and full-time driving positions. A total of 407 drivers are required to launch the service, comprising 122 part-time and 285 full-time positions. Interested candidates have until the 17th of this month to submit their applications. MTCC further noted that priority will be given to individuals currently registered in the Transport Ministry’s official taxi driver registry.
The government’s decision to introduce a dedicated taxi line aims to address the challenges faced by the public in securing taxi services and to establish a reliable, convenient transportation system. During a parliamentary session last month, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, announced that the taxi line is expected to be operational by the end of January next year. The Minister highlighted that the fleet will consist of electric vehicles (EVs). He noted that the manufacturing company has emphasized the importance of ensuring these vehicles are specifically customized for the local environment to prevent potential technical issues.
The government taxi line will utilize 100% eco-friendly vehicles, featuring three different sizes to cater to various needs. This 24-hour service will be facilitated through a dedicated mobile application, mirroring the operational models of international ride-hailing services such as Uber and Grab.
