Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has stated that the public should elect leaders who facilitate progress rather than obstructing initiatives under the pretext of ensuring accountability. He urged the election of representatives who can match the work ethic and pace of the President.

Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the campaign office of Moosa Ali Jaleel, the People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate for the upcoming Malé City mayoral election, the Vice President emphasized the importance of choosing leaders capable of resolving the persistent issues facing the capital city. He noted that Malé has a storied history, and within that history, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stands out as a former Mayor who earned profound affection and respect from the citizens. The Vice President further highlighted that the President is currently implementing the visions he holds for the city as outlined in his manifesto.

The Vice President stressed that for the upcoming local council elections, Malé City requires a leader who aligns with the President’s momentum and speed of work. He noted that such a candidate must possess deep patriotism, affirming that the PNC’s candidate embodies these qualities. He cautioned against electing those who would hinder progress by claiming to seek accountability. Addressing the role of oversight, the Vice President pointed out that the public has already elected representatives to the People’s Majlis for that specific purpose.

“The public has already chosen their representatives to perform those roles. Therefore, it is the members of the Majlis and the relevant institutions that will hold the government accountable. As our President has stated, we need local and city council leaders who will work in harmony with the government to facilitate services for the people. In choosing such leaders, we hope the citizens of Malé will elect someone who shares the President’s vision. That is the kind of leader I am referring to,” the Vice President said.

In his remarks, the Vice President also touched upon the challenges facing Malé City. Acknowledging that the city is heavily congested, he stated that residents deserve to live in a peaceful and orderly environment. Highlighting issues such as parking, he noted that the government is actively working to implement planned solutions, and the Mayor of Malé City would be the key figure in providing the necessary support for these efforts. However, he observed that such cooperation had been lacking over the past two years.

Concluding his speech, the Vice President stated that the PNC candidates represent a unified team, with the Mayor serving as the team leader. He reaffirmed that what the nation needs today are patriotic leaders and executives who are committed to the country’s progress.
