As part of the ongoing preparations for the opening of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), the check-in systems of the Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian, have been tested and a trial conducted. This trial was carried out to test the services, equipment, and machinery of the new terminal, as well as to train the human resources who will be the key operational personnel, before its opening. This is also a part of the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, conducted to prepare for the changes that will occur throughout the terminal both before its opening and after services commence.

During the trial, conducted with the participation of MACL staff, it was ensured that Maldivian’s systems and the boarding pass printing systems were functioning correctly. Additionally, other information technology-related aspects of the new terminal were also tested.

MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed also observed the trial’s progress and actively participated in it. Notably, CEO Shareef was the first trial passenger to check in during this trial. In addition to CEO Shareef, Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lam’aan and Mujuthaba Latheef, along with other senior company officials, also participated in the trial. Following the trial, MACL CEO Shareef stated that it was a pleasure to conduct trials of Maldivian’s check-in systems in collaboration with MACL.

“Rest assured! This has begun. This has started. What lies ahead is to bring in airplanes at a very fast pace and officially open this facility. The employees are very happy, in a very strong national spirit,” said MACL MD Shareef.

As MACL prepares to open the new Velana International Airport terminal in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence, the new terminal will initially serve Maldivian’s international flights. Subsequently, before the start of this year’s tourism season, the services of many international airlines operating to Velana International Airport will be transferred to the new terminal.
