President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed interest in utilizing Estonia’s experience to strengthen the Maldives’ e-governance and ICT infrastructure. The President revealed this during a courtesy call by Mr. Tõnis Saar, Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs of Estonia.
During the meeting, the President shared his government’s vision of making the Maldives a digitally empowered nation and highlighted the ongoing efforts to prioritize digitalization in public services. The President acknowledged Estonia’s leading role in digitalization, which is internationally recognized, and commended the country for this achievement.
“Estonia’s innovative approaches are based on transparent, result-oriented, and reliable standards. I am interested in utilizing Estonia’s experience to strengthen the Maldives’ e-governance and ICT infrastructure,” the President said. Additionally, the President emphasized the importance of aligning national development goals with enhancing cybersecurity, promoting digital literacy, strengthening the digital capabilities of local governments, and improving public service delivery to a dispersed population.
In his remarks, Mr. Tõnis Saar, Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs of Estonia, shared Estonia’s experiences and challenges in implementing digital systems across various sectors, as well as their impact on governance and everyday life. He also expressed interest in providing Estonia’s experience and assistance in achieving the Maldives’ digital transformation goals.
Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs of Estonia and the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology of the Maldives.
