President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the reclamation of Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) will commence immediately following the completion of the Giravarufalhu reclamation project. Uthuru Thila Falhu is envisioned as a multifunctional island developed for both residential and industrial purposes. Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, President Dr. Muizzu stated that UTF is next in line for reclamation once the ongoing work at Giravarufalhu is finalized. The President detailed that the island will feature a dedicated residential zone, industrial sectors, and the development of ‘Hope Island’.
Key projects planned for Uthuru Thila Falhu include the establishment of a 200-hectare Agricultural Economic Zone. The first phase of this zone will focus on greenhouse farming of various imported produce suitable for such environments. The second phase will involve the cultivation of essential staple crops, including onions and potatoes. Furthermore, the second phase includes the development of a large-scale poultry farm aimed at achieving total self-sufficiency in egg production, thereby eliminating the need for imports. Another significant project on the island is “Hope Island,” a specialized facility designed for the rehabilitation of minors at risk of criminal involvement. To facilitate these reformative and rehabilitative programs, 15 hectares of land will be reclaimed for “Hope Island,” with the capacity to accommodate 700 individuals.
The government is actively expediting land reclamation efforts across the Greater Malé Region and the atolls by deploying large-scale dredgers. While the reclamation of Hulhumalé Phase 3 has been completed, work is progressing rapidly on the Ras Malé project. Similarly, the Giravarufalhu reclamation project is proceeding at a swift pace, with over 15 hectares already successfully reclaimed.
