The United States has decided to take measures against senior officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs the West Bank. This action, ordered by President Donald Trump, Israel’s strongest supporter, comes after accusations that these organizations are obstructing efforts to establish peace between Palestinian Muslims and Jews.
The decision to sanction PA and PLO officials comes at a time when Western powers are announcing their recognition of Palestine as an independent state. This includes France, a major power in the European Union (EU), as well as the United Kingdom and Canada, considered main Western powers.
These three countries have revealed plans to officially recognize Palestine as an independent state at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York this September. This decision has not been well-received by the US, and Israel has also expressed disapproval, criticizing the leaders of these countries.
The US State Department said that the measures against senior PA and PLO officials include suspending visa issuance for entry into the United States. However, it’s unclear which specific officials will be targeted. “Taking action against those who obstruct peace efforts is necessary for our [America’s] national security,” stated a release from the State Department.
The department claimed that PA and PLO senior officials and members are working to expose the ongoing war between Palestinians and Jews to the international community, including the International Criminal Court (ICC). The US State Department has characterized the PA and PLO as organizations that encourage terrorism.
The PA and PLO are a government and an organization that advocate for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and work to protect and ensured ensure the rights of the Palestinian people. Neither the PA nor the PLO have made any official statement regarding this matter.
