Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, has announced that the current administration has initiated a massive infrastructure development project aimed at advancing the healthcare sector, the scale of which has not been witnessed in recent history.

The Minister made these remarks while addressing a press conference held at the President’s Office.

During the press briefing, Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim highlighted that extensive efforts are underway to expand healthcare services across the Maldives. He shared details regarding the ongoing initiatives to develop regional hospitals and enhance their service capacities, with the primary objective of reducing the public’s dependency on Male’ for medical treatment.

The Minister emphasized that the hospital system is a holistic and interconnected network where departments are mutually dependent. He further noted that the healthcare system can only be effectively developed through a synchronized approach, as various projects are deeply integrated and rely on one another for success.

Minister Nazim stated that since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, a significant infrastructure development project has been launched to strengthen the nation’s health sector, surpassing any such previous efforts in recent years.

“Following President Muizzu’s assumption of office and his subsequent visits to the atolls, it became evident through our efforts to expand services that the healthcare infrastructure in the islands had severely deteriorated. Some facilities were extremely congested, while others had fallen into such disrepair that they were no longer fit to provide services, suffering from issues such as leakages during rain. To rectify these challenges, the Ministry of Health is currently implementing a massive infrastructure project, the likes of which has not been seen in recent history, in line with the government’s policies,” the Minister stated.

Regarding infrastructure projects in the atolls, 39 projects for the construction of new hospitals are currently underway. Furthermore, the construction of 19 new health centers is in progress, while extension and upgrading works are being carried out at 89 existing centers. While 12 projects have already been completed, an additional 22 projects are in the planning stages. These upcoming plans include the construction of 8 new hospitals and 5 new health centers, along with 9 extension and upgrading projects.
