The United Nations has reinstated sanctions against Iran, including a ban on arms sales to the country, in an effort to force Iran to halt its nuclear program. The decision was made through the UN Security Council, the most powerful organ of the UN, led by the three Western powers: the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. These three countries allege that under the guise of producing nuclear energy, Iran is working on developing a nuclear weapon in violation of the 2015 agreement. However, Iran has repeatedly denied these allegations.
The reimposition of some measures that were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers is expected to further escalate the already tense situation in the Middle East. Iran has warned of a harsh response if sanctions are reinstated. Shortly after the sanctions were reimposed, Iran decided to recall its ambassadors to the UK, France, and Germany for “consultations”.
Russia, which maintains close ties with Iran, has condemned this UN decision. The three Western countries leading this effort had initially stated that there was room to delay the implementation of this decision for six months. However, they called for Iran to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to visit its nuclear facilities and for Iran to return to the negotiating table to find a permanent solution to this issue.
