The UK government has announced that the police have been given additional powers to stop recurring protests in specific areas. This decision was made after protesters refused to postpone a planned demonstration against the Israeli state’s genocide in Gaza, following a a recent attack on a synagogue. The UK Home Office stated that after evaluating the outcomes and negative societal impacts of previous protests, senior police officers now have the authority to prevent similar demonstrations.

While the right to assembly is a fundamental right granted to citizens, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said that protests that create fear and unease among other citizens will not be allowed. She added that the ongoing series of pro-Palestinian protests have left the Jewish population feeling uneasy. Over 500 people were arrested yesterday during a protest against the ban of the pro-Palestinian group Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws.

The organizers of yesterday’s protest have described the granting of additional powers to the police to stop demonstrations as a dangerous attack on the rights of freedom of expression and assembly.
