Two Immigration officers who were arrested on suspicion of misusing their position while working at Maldives Immigration have been banned from leaving the country. A police media official said that the travel ban on the two officers was imposed under a court order. It has also been stated that the phone of a family member of former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shammaan Waheed has been taken into police custody under a court order.
While former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shammaan Waheed’s detention has been extended by 15 days, the detention of three officers who misused their position while working at Immigration has also been extended. The police said that when the arrested officers were brought to court yesterday to decide on their detention, two were ordered to be detained for 10 days and one for 3 days.
In a statement released by the police, it was said that employees working in sections other than Immigration’s Task Force and Risk Management Section had misused their position to search a house where foreigners were living. The statement also mentioned that foreigners were taken into Immigration custody from that house with a large amount of money. Additionally, the police said that one day later, on the order of former Controller Shammaan, a foreigner who was taken into detention with 530,000 rufiyaa was released from custody at midnight.
Furthermore, the police said that it has been discovered that an Immigration employee who actively participated in searching the house where these foreigners were arrested, met the released foreigner on the street, obtained the money he had, and entered the building where Shammaan was living with that money.
