Since the ratification of the 2008 Constitution, holding presidential and parliamentary elections separately has presented significant political and economic challenges. The absence of a parliamentary majority in the early stages of a new administration often obstructs government functions, leading to difficulties in budget approval and the confirmation of cabinet ministers. Furthermore, the misuse of state resources for political gain during parliamentary election campaigns has become a common practice, placing a substantial burden on the national budget.

President Dr. Muizzu, former Presidents Nasheed and Solih, and political parties such as JP, MDA, and Adhaalath have all reached a consensus at various times that holding both elections on the same day is the solution to these issues. Legal experts highlight that this change could save the state budget over MVR 120 million, while also fostering political stability and strengthening government accountability. The Elections Commission also concurs that this is the most fiscally and administratively advantageous approach for the Maldives. Consequently, efforts are currently underway to seek public opinion on this matter.
