U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to immediately fire generals and senior military officers who oppose his policies or whom he dislikes. He made these remarks before meeting with top generals and officers in Virginia. “I’m going to be meeting with generals and admirals and other [military] leaders, and if I don’t like any of them, I’ll fire them on the spot,” Trump said. While the White House has not disclosed the purpose of the meeting with military leaders, Trump made these comments before departing to attend the meeting.

As Trump threatens to fire generals and military officials he dislikes, his administration’s Secretary of Defense, Pete Heggseth, has also spoken disparagingly about military generals. He made these comments during a meeting with military generals and top admirals. Heggseth described the majority of the U.S. military as consisting of “fat generals” who have become “overweight” from overeating. He also stated that the deterioration of the U.S. military is due to allowing non-white individuals, people of other races, and women to serve in the U.S. military. Heggseth called for the resignation of generals who support these policies. He also said that generals who oppose Trump’s policies have no option but to resign.

Following Heggseth’s directive, the top general of the U.S. military, who was a Black individual, has been dismissed from his position. Additionally, the top admiral of the Navy, who was a woman, has also been fired. Heggseth has attempted to defend these actions. He said that these two officials were dismissed as part of an effort to remedy the “corrupted” culture that had developed in the U.S. military. “If my words are causing distress in your hearts, the best course of action is to resign with dignity. I know that many of you support [Trump’s] policies. And I know that your hearts are overflowing because of my words,” Heggseth said. He also stated that it is unacceptable to see “fat” generals and admirals within the Pentagon building.

In response to Trump and Heggseth meeting with top military generals and officers, belittling them, and issuing threats, the opposition Democratic Party has condemned these actions. They have characterized it as a meeting held with the intention of politicizing the military.
