Economic experts suggest that even if the U.S. Supreme Court rules President Donald Trump’s proposed heavy tariffs on imported goods as legally invalid, such a verdict would provide little relief to the global economy. While the court’s decision is expected to cast a shadow over Trump’s trade policies, experts believe it has instead intensified uncertainty in global markets. This apprehension stems from Trump’s immediate defiance of the ruling and the looming questions regarding the new tariffs he might introduce to replace those invalidated by the court.

Furthermore, experts note that countries that entered into trade agreements with the U.S. out of fear of increased tariffs now face the heightened risk of those agreements being unilaterally renegotiated. Since the introduction of these measures, the U.S. has collected approximately $175 billion in tariff revenue; however, the court’s ruling does not specify a mechanism for refunding these funds to the affected nations. Trump is reportedly considering an alternative legal route to impose a blanket tariff of up to 10 percent on all countries for a period of 150 days. His failure to provide a specific timeline for this implementation has added another layer of volatility to international markets.

In addition, the Supreme Court’s ruling does not prevent the imposition of higher tariffs on specific commodities such as aluminum and steel. The unpredictability of Trump’s next moves, including the potential for raising tariffs on a broader range of goods, remains a primary reason why experts believe the global economy will not find significant respite in the wake of this judicial decision.
