Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has stated that the fishing communities greatly appreciate the work being done by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the development of the fishing industry, and that 2025 will be the year that colors the development of this industry. Minister Shiyam said this in a post on X related to the President’s current trip to Huvadhoo Atoll.
“One thing that was noted during the President’s current trip to Huvadhoo Atoll, the atoll with the most fishermen in the Maldives, where he visited many islands of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, is that the fishing communities greatly appreciate what the President is doing and planning to do for the development of the fishing industry,” the Minister said. Additionally, the Minister thanked the people of Hoandehdhoo, Nadella, Vaadhoo, and Fiyoari of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll for the welcome they gave to the President.
According to the government’s fishing company, MIFCO, the most fish was weighed in from Huvadhoo Atoll during the first two days of this year. In this regard, 92.6 metric tons of fish were weighed in from 22 boats from Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, while 80.7 metric tons of fish were weighed in from 20 boats from Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
In line with President Muizzu’s pledge, MIFCO is now releasing payments for weighed fish within two days of weighing. MIFCO is also working on providing fuel needed for fishing on credit.
