The Minister of Sports and Fitness, Abdullah Rafiu, has stated that the new international swimming pool being established by the Swimming Association of Maldives will be one of the places that will play the biggest role in taking Maldivian sports to another level. He said this in a special interview given to PSM News after observing the progress of the new swimming pool construction. Minister Rafiu said that hosting international competitions will be a great experience for Maldivian athletes. In addition, he said that it will provide opportunities to participate in many competitions.
The minister noted that one of the main things considered when hosting international games in the Maldives has been the lack of a swimming pool.

The minister highlighted that this swimming pool project is an initiative led by the Ministry of Sports, the Association, and a private party. The project is also receiving assistance from World Aquatics. The construction of the Olympic-sized swimming pool, which the Swimming Association is working to establish, began in March of last year after the government allocated land for it. Noting that this was one of the first projects to start after taking office, the minister said that the area has been cleared and the structure currently visible will be of international standard to host competitions in the future.
“It is being designed with a 50-meter pool and high jump facilities, so this place will be a great advancement for hosting international competitions in the Maldives and for further developing swimming,” the minister said while speaking to PSM News after inspecting the newly established swimming pool. The four-story swimming complex will be prepared with the most modern facilities and for conducting swimming training. The Swimming Association informs that work on laying a strong foundation and establishing the base on top of it is now progressing rapidly.
