President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government’s current objective is to double the country’s renewable energy capacity, aiming to reach 220 megawatts.

Delivering the Presidential Address at the opening session of the People’s Majlis for the current year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu unveiled plans for revolutionary changes to the Maldives’ energy policy. The President stated that this target represents 50 percent of the total capacity required to achieve the national goal of generating 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028. To realize this ambition, he noted that several renewable energy projects have been slated for implementation in Malé City and various islands across the Maldives.

“The Maldives incurs its highest expenditure on the importation of fuel. Statistics indicate that while the Maldives imports diesel worth 443.6 million dollars, a significant portion of this is utilized for electricity generation. Such heavy reliance on diesel for energy production constitutes the greatest threat to the nation’s energy security,” the President remarked.

The President further highlighted that when the current administration took office, the proportion of electricity generated from renewable sources stood at a mere 4 percent, equivalent to 53 megawatts.

“Although the renewable energy output was only at 4 percent or 53 megawatts when this administration assumed responsibility, efforts over the past two years have successfully increased this figure to 110 megawatts. This is a sector that had not received adequate attention from previous administrations,” the President added.

These projects are expected to reduce the dependency on fuel for providing essential services and facilitate the retention of foreign currency within the Maldives. The President described this initiative as a crucial step toward protecting the Maldivian environment and ensuring long-term economic sustainability.
