President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives will always work to ensure that the Parliament is an inclusive institution. He made this statement in a social media post shared in connection with the International Day of Parliamentarism. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that parliaments play a crucial role in maintaining democracy and promoting good governance in a country. However, he noted that the limited role of women in parliaments is an issue that requires special attention both nationally and internationally.

Although women’s representation in the Maldivian Parliament is low, the President has assured that he will always work to ensure a parliament that has established gender equality and an inclusive environment. He also stated that the Parliament should be an institution that serves the people with integrity and adheres to robust principles.

Despite the limited role of women in the Maldivian Parliament, efforts are being made to increase their participation. In the current 20th People’s Majlis, out of 93 members, only 3 are women. However, the Parliament, with its PNC supermajority, continues to provide opportunities to increase the involvement of these members in parliamentary floor discussions and committee work.
